Conservatory Glass Replacement: Roof and Side Panels

Conservatory glass is replaced panel by panel, so one cracked or misted unit doesn't mean a new conservatory. Mark replaces glass roof panels and the sealed units in the side frames of existing conservatories, whether a panel has cracked, misted between the panes or you want to swap clear glass for a solar-control type that keeps the room cooler. This page is about the glass. We don't convert roofs or repair polycarbonate, tiled or solid roof sections.

Side panels are the simpler job. The lower and upper frames of a conservatory hold sealed units just like ordinary windows, and a misted or cracked unit is replaced the same way: beads out, old unit out, new unit made to size and fitted. Because the frame stays, the rest of the conservatory isn't disturbed. Doors in the conservatory can usually have their glass replaced too.

Roof glass takes more care. Glass roof panels sit in glazing bars, held by caps or clips and sealed against rain. Each panel is measured, a matching unit made with the right safety glass for overhead use, and the old one carefully lifted out and the new one seated and sealed. Working at height on a roof means the panel is accessed safely from inside or with suitable equipment, and the bars and seals around it checked while it's open.

Misting in conservatory glass has the same cause as in any double glazing: the edge seal of the unit has failed and moist air has got between the panes. It can't be wiped away or resealed from outside, so the unit is replaced. Our misted double glazed units page explains this in more depth.

Many older conservatories have plain clear glass in the roof, which lets in plenty of heat in summer and glare all year. Replacing those units with a solar-control or tinted glass reduces both, and can be done a panel at a time or across the whole roof. Mark will explain the options available for your panel size. If a roof panel has just cracked and you want to know what to do first, read our guide on cracked conservatory roof glass.

Before the glass is replaced, it helps to keep the room safe. A cracked roof panel can be taped on the inside to hold the pieces together, and anything fragile moved out from underneath. Keep people and pets away from directly below until it's been looked at. Then send Mark a photo or call 07535 916982, and you'll get a fixed price confirmed before any work starts, with the panel made safe in the meantime if it needs it.

How the repair works

  1. 1. Photo of the panel Send a photo showing which panel is damaged and one of the whole conservatory.
  2. 2. Measure and price The panel is measured and a fixed price confirmed before the glass is ordered.
  3. 3. Replace and seal The old panel removed, the new one fitted and the seals checked for leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Can one conservatory roof panel be replaced?

Yes. Roof panels sit individually in glazing bars, so a single cracked or misted panel can be removed and replaced without touching the rest of the roof.

Can misted conservatory glass be fixed?

Misting between the panes means the unit's seal has failed, so the unit is replaced rather than repaired. The frame stays, and only the glass unit is changed.

Do you repair polycarbonate conservatory roofs?

No. We replace glass panels only. Polycarbonate sheet roofs and roof conversions are a job for a conservatory roofing specialist.
