Sliding Patio Door Repairs in London: Rollers, Tracks and Locks

A sliding patio door that drags, jumps off its track or refuses to lock is nearly always repairable. The panel runs on rollers in a bottom track, so most faults come from worn rollers, a dirty or damaged track, or a keep that no longer lines up with the lock. Sliding patio doors fail in a different way from hinged doors, which is why they get their own page. A French door or a front door hangs on hinges; a slider carries the full weight of a large glazed panel on two small roller carriages. When one of those rollers wears flat or its bearing breaks, the panel drops at one corner, scrapes along the track and becomes hard to move.

The first thing we check is the track. Grit, leaves and bits of old sealant collect in the bottom channel and make even good rollers struggle. A proper clean often transforms a door on its own. If the track itself is dented or a cover strip has split, that needs dealing with before new rollers go in, otherwise they wear out again quickly.

Roller replacement means lifting the sliding panel out of the frame, which is a two-hands job on large doors. The old carriages are removed, matched to a replacement that suits your door system and fitted, then the panel height is adjusted so it runs level and meets the lock cleanly.

Locking problems are the next most common call. A patio door handle that turns but does not engage, a lock that needs lifting or shoving before it catches, or a key that will not turn usually points to misalignment between the hooks and the keep. Once the panel sits at the right height that often resolves itself; if the lock or keep is worn, we replace it.

Security matters on a slider. Most doors have anti-lift blocks or pins that stop the panel being raised off its track from outside. These are sometimes removed during earlier repairs and never put back. We check they are present and set correctly before we leave.
