Velux Window Repair in London: Roof Window and Skylight Glass

Roof windows and skylights take more weather than any other glass in the house. They face the sky, catch hail and falling debris, and go through bigger temperature swings than vertical windows. Over time the glass can crack, the sealed unit can mist up, and the hinges and handles can stiffen. Mark replaces glass and repairs hardware on existing Velux-style roof windows and skylights, so a sound window can keep working.

The glass in a roof window is a sealed unit, much like a normal double glazed window, but usually with a laminated inner pane so that if it breaks it holds together rather than falling into the room. That is why a cracked roof window often stays in one piece with a spider-web crack. It's still worth replacing promptly, because the crack lets water in and weakens the unit. Replacement glass is ordered to the correct size and specification for the window.

Misting between the panes means the unit's seal has failed, as with any sealed unit. It won't clear by itself. Many pivot roof windows let the sash rotate fully so the glass can be reached from inside, which often makes replacement simpler than it looks from below. Our misted double glazed units page explains how sealed unit replacement works.

Stiff or broken hinges and handles are the other common faults. Pivot hinges can seize, the handle bar at the top can break, and the friction that holds the window open can wear so the sash won't stay where you put it. These parts can usually be replaced on the existing window.

Access depends on the window and the room. Most roof windows can be worked on from inside, but very high or awkward windows may need extra access equipment, and Mark will check this when he quotes. The repair covers the glass and hardware of the window itself. Leaking flashing or roofing round the outside of the window is roofing work rather than glazing. For broken glass elsewhere, see cracked glass replacement.

Roof window glass is often specified differently from ordinary windows, with laminated inner panes, toughened outer panes and coatings to control heat. Replacement units are ordered to match the original specification so the window performs as it should. A label inside the frame, usually at the top of the sash, often gives the size and type, so a photo of it saves time when quoting. Blinds fitted to the sash are removed carefully and refitted after the glass is changed. Send a photo or call to get started.

How the repair works

  1. 1. Photo of the window A photo from inside and any visible label on the frame helps identify the window and glass.
  2. 2. Fixed price Glass or parts specified and a fixed price confirmed before any work starts.
  3. 3. Replace New glass or hardware fitted, the window checked to open, close and seal.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace the glass in a Velux window?

Yes. The glass is a sealed unit that can be replaced in the existing frame. Many pivot roof windows can be rotated so the glass is reached from inside.

Can a misted roof window be fixed?

Yes, by replacing the sealed unit. Misting between the panes means the seal has failed, and the glass won't clear on its own.

Is a cracked skylight dangerous?

Roof window glass usually has a laminated inner pane that holds together when cracked. It should still be replaced promptly, because the crack lets water in and weakens the glass.
