Window Glass Replacement Cost Guide for London Homes
Not all window glass is priced the same, and understanding why can save you from either overpaying or being surprised by a quote. This guide walks through the main glass types used in London homes, what they typically cost to replace, and the practical factors — beyond the glass itself — that affect the final price.
The main glass types and their price bands
Glass isn't a single product — the type used affects both cost and where it's legally allowed to go in a property.
- Float glass — standard, cheapest option, used where no safety rating is required
- Toughened safety glass — heat-treated to break into small granules rather than shards; required near doors, at low level and in bathrooms
- Laminated safety glass — two panes bonded with an interlayer, stays in place if broken; used for extra security or acoustic benefit, at a higher cost
- Low-E (low emissivity) glass — coated to improve thermal performance, a modest add-on within a double glazed unit
- Obscure/privacy glass — patterned or frosted, common in bathrooms, priced similarly to standard glass with a small premium for the pattern
- Georgian bar and leaded glass — decorative bars or lead work added to a unit, increasing both cost and lead time
Single pane vs sealed double glazed unit
If the glass in question is a standalone single pane — common in older timber windows, internal doors or some conservatories — replacement is usually simpler and cheaper than glass sitting within a double glazed sealed unit, because there's no spacer bar, gas fill or bonding process involved.
Where the damaged pane forms part of a double glazed unit, we generally replace the whole unit rather than just one pane, so the seal, thickness and gas fill all match the surrounding glazing — this is explained further in our sealed unit replacement vs new windows guide.
Size and shape matter as much as glass type
A large lounge or bay window pane naturally costs more than a small bathroom pane of the same glass spec, simply due to the amount of glass and handling involved. Shaped glass — arched tops, angled bay units, or anything custom-cut — costs more again because it can't be cut from standard stock sizes and often needs templating on site.
Access and location on the property
Ground floor windows with clear access are the quickest and cheapest to work on. Upper floor windows, especially where scaffolding, a cherry picker or extended ladders are needed, add both time and cost. Conservatory roof glass and shopfront glazing are their own category again, often needing specialist handling due to size and weight.
Indicative glass replacement costs
These figures reflect typical London jobs — always confirmed as a fixed price once we know the exact glass spec and size required.
Getting the most accurate price
The clearest way to get an accurate quote is to tell us the room the window is in (this hints at what safety glass rules apply), roughly how big the pane is, and send a photo if possible. That's usually enough for us to quote a fixed price without a separate visit.
If you're dealing with a cracked pane urgently, our emergency glazier call out cost guide explains how same-day pricing works alongside standard glass replacement costs.
| Glass type | Typical pane size | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|
| Float glass, single pane | Small–medium | £70–£140 |
| Toughened safety glass | Small–medium | £120–£220 |
| Laminated safety glass | Small–medium | £150–£280 |
| Low-E upgrade within sealed unit | Any size | Add £20–£50 |
| Georgian bar or leaded glass | Any size | Add £30–£90 |
| Large bay or lounge pane | Over 1m² | £180–£350 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need toughened or laminated glass?
It depends on the location — near a door, at low level, or in a bathroom, toughened is usually the minimum requirement under Part K, while laminated is chosen more for extra security or noise reduction. Tell us the location and we'll confirm what's needed.
Can you replace just the cracked pane in a double glazed unit?
Usually the whole sealed unit is replaced rather than a single pane, since the two panes are bonded together as one unit with a specific gas fill and spacer.
Is patterned or obscure glass more expensive?
Only slightly — there's a modest premium over plain float or toughened glass, but it's not a major cost driver compared to size or safety rating.
How long does bespoke or shaped glass take to arrive?
Standard sizes are often available within a few days, while shaped, leaded or Georgian bar glass can take a little longer as it's made to order.
Do you supply glass for conservatories and shopfronts too?
Yes, though these are typically priced separately due to the larger sizes and specialist handling involved — get in touch with details and we'll advise.
